Is Your Blog A Secret?

Only a few of my closest friends and family know about my book blog.

I don’t go out of my way to hide it from people—I’ll admit to having one if someone asks—but it’s also something I don’t advertise. It’s not that I’m ashamed of it, I just prefer to keep it on the DL. I’ve narrowed my reasons for keeping my blog a ~leetle~ secret down to two, quick points that maybe you can relate to:

MY BLOG IS MY SAFE PLACE

Meeting people in the real world who want to talk books with me is luckily a non-problem, so my blog wasn’t born out of the common book blogger desire to connect with other bookworms. In a way, it’s loosely the opposite of that mission.

While I love the people in my real life, I also love having a blog that I can dedicate whole posts to my word vomit. It feels freeing to have a place—albeit a virtual one—where I can ramble about whatever without worrying about boring people. So, despite the “stranger danger” that comes with sharing part of my life online and interacting with people on the internet, my blog feels like my safe place.

There are truly few things better than coming home after being beaten up by a tough day and interacting with other bloggers who really don’t know much about me, except that I love books. I always say that reading is my favorite form of escapism, but I never really considered that blogging is a close second 🤔.

WRITING IS INTIMATE

One of the main reasons I started this blog was so I could practice my writing. Specifically, I wanted to practice forming complete thoughts and opinions on a book or subject matter, something I don’t always have the luxury of doing in a conversation (remember what I said about not boring people 😬). So, even though I’m not ashamed of having a blog, I am shy about my writing because it’s literal documentation of my thought process. I’m just figuring stuff (ie. my thoughts on books and etc.) out, and it feels better doing it in my own personal headspace (aka blog 𝙖𝙠𝙖𝙠𝙖 virtual safe space).

That’s all I have for this super short post! Can you relate to it? Is your blog a secret? What are some reasons you don’t tell people about your blog? Let me know 😄.

  1. I feel–only my parents know I have a blog because otherwise they might be concerned about random ARCs showing up, but even my closet friends don’t know about it. I love writing but don’t feel comfortable sharing it with people I actually know; faceless internet people feel so much safer lmao

    1. Right, it’s funny how we prefer sharing our thoughts and writing to internet people over our closest friends. While my friends know about my blog, I still haven’t showed it to them because I’m not comfortable with sharing my writing with them either. Maybe we value their opinions too much and don’t want to be hurt 🙂.
