Dear Authors, Please Write More About… (Part 1)

Welcome to a new series I’m starting called Dear Authors, Please Write More About…!

There are certain topics, tropes, and types of characters that make me gravitate towards a book. In this series, I’ll share those items with you all in hopes that an author will come across these posts and answer my pleas for more books about those thingsHere’s to screaming into the void (because let’s be real, this series is futile.):

Alternate realities, parallel universes, mutiple timelines—whatever you want to call them—have been a hot topic for discussion this year, especially with TV shows like Rick and Morty becoming incredibly successful. There’s still so much not understood about this topic, and I think that makes perfect grounds for creating an awesome MINDF*CK story. Blake Crouch offered an interesting insight on the implications of alternate realities in his book Dark Matter, and I want to read more about theoretical situations like that (while plunging into another existential crisis).

The concept of being able to immerse oneself an entirely new world with only a device is amazing to me, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. I’ve read multiple books with virtual reality elements—Heir Apparent, Ready Player One, and Insignia to name a few—and loved them all immensely. So, if you’re an author and are interested in writing an automatic favorite of mine (LOL, thanks but why?), write about virtual reality (*please).dazzle (2).jpg

You wanna know what’s better than plain ‘ol thieves? SCHEMING ‘OL THIEVES. There’s something so satisfying in seeing the makings of an intricate plan and then it being put into action. The Final Empire and Six of Crows are two books that put their own interesting (AND HEART-SHATTERING) spins on heists, and I need more creative stories like that! (So demanding, Belle.)

I have a soft spot for my fellow nerds. They have all been very pleasant, awkward, and innocent in books I have read in the past, like Eliza and Her Monsters (protect the nerds.)I live for #relatable characters, and nerdy protagonists are probably the most #relatable of them all.

There’s been a steady rise in the diversity of characters and representation of minorities in books, most notably of the YA genre. Being Asian myself, it’s great to see this change, but there’s still room for more progress.

  1. I need more heist stories too in my life! Seriously, there are not enough of these kinds of books. I’m a writer, and I think my next big writing project is going to be a heist novel, because I love them so much and can’t find exactly the kind of one I want to read.

      1. It’s gonna happen at some point! I will keep you posted. All I’ve got figured out is my team, who is lead by a female mastermind (I feel like we don’t see enough of those). Also I think I want to make it a series or a duology at the very least.

      2. That sounds awesome! I’ve never read about a female thieving crew leader and curious to see what other characters you’ve created. Also, I’m very pro-duology 👍🏽. It’s less commitment haha. Good luck with your story!

      3. Me either! I also feel like in the heist genre the teams always have more men than women on it, so I made my team more women than men because I want to showcase different kinds of strong female characters. Duologies are very low commitment, I might take that into consideration. Thank you!

  2. I adore Alternate Realities (and Rick and Morty for that matter) because I think it opens up a whole window for existential humour and discussions which I’M ALWAYS SO HERE FOR!! And heists are the best I love my smol thieving children.
I hope more books with Asian MCs come out in the future ❤!

    1. Hahaha, exactly! It’s great to joke and laugh about how we’re all going to die in the end 😁🙃. And I also love fussing over an immoral thieving crew 💕. Yes to more diversity!
