The Fall Book Tag

November has just begun and (I) people have already started gearing up for Winter and Christmas. In order to counteract all the excitement for the holiday season and reorient (myself) everyone to the time, I decided to do The Fall Book Tag.

I was tagged by Dani from Perspective of a Writer (thank you!); She’s a sweet girl and her blog is full awesome content, so you should give it a look.

The Rules

  • Thank the lovely person who tagged you.
  • Please link back to Bionic Book Worm, as the creator of this tag!! She wants to see your answers!!
  • Use the graphics – if you want 🙂
  • Have fun!

The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

the girl with all the gifts.jpgGoodreads Description:

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her “our little genius.”

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

This book put an interesting spin on the traditional green-colored, brain-eating zombies. M.R. Carey explored human nature and brought characters to life in this thriller riddled with death. The Girl with All the Gifts‘ chilling atmosphere makes it perfect for this season.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

the murder of roger ackroydGoodreads Description:

In the village of King’s Abbot, a widow’s sudden suicide sparks rumors that she murdered her first husband, was being blackmailed, and was carrying on a secret affair with the wealthy Roger Ackroyd. The following evening, Ackroyd is murdered in his locked study–but not before receiving a letter identifying the widow’s blackmailer. King’s Abbot is crawling with suspects, including a nervous butler, Ackroyd’s wayward stepson, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Cecil Ackroyd, who has taken up residence in the victim’s home. It’s now up to the famous detective Hercule Poirot, who has retired to King’s Abbot to garden, to solve the case of who killed Roger Ackroyd–a task in which he is aided by the village doctor and narrator, James Sheppard, and by Sheppard’s ingenious sister, Caroline.

This classic had me hooked from the first page and fooled me until the very last. I was so blown away by the ending that I spoiled the whole book to my siblings—with their consent of course (I’m not an animal).

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

geekerella.jpgGoodreads Description:

Anything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

As the title hints, this book is a modern-day retelling of Cinderella for millennial geeks (like me—and maybe you?). Cinderella stories usually irk me because the stepmother and sisters are always the worst; but, I was able to tolerate them this time around thanks to sweet, nerdy romance.

I just finished this book and will have a review up soon 😊.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

the scorpio races.jpgGoodreads Description:

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

This book was made for this tag. Its cover has all the fall colors, and the story is set in November! It’s too bad that this book doesn’t get as much love as Stiefvater’s series, The Raven Boys.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

dark matterGoodreads Description:

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

This was easily my favorite book of 2017. Not only is it action-packed, but it also plays around with a fascinating, theoretical part of physics. Dark Matter could be used for almost all of the sections in this tag, but I spared you all redundancy (Your welcome. Read Dark Matter!).

I went into more detail about my feelings for this book in this review.

Warcross by Marie Lu

warcross.jpg

Goodreads Description:

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

I’ve been itching to read this book since I first came across one of its many rave reviews. All of my favorite science fiction books have elements of virtual reality, and Warcross seems to fit the description. Maybe I can get it for Christmas (Shush, Belle. This is the fall tag).

Tagging Time!

In my usual tag fashion, I’m tagging my five most recent followers, but feel free to answer these questions and let me know even if I didn’t tag you 😊:

porters-holiday-sale-3

Thanks for reading! There’s no fall where I’m currently living, so I haven’t done any of the fun things associated with the season (e.g. apple picking, crunching leaves, getting lost in a corn maze). What about you? How have you been enjoying fall? Or have you completely skipped over it and began preparing for the holiday season (because same)? Let me know 🙂.

  1. I’ve only read one book on your list, Scorpio Races, but I definitely think it fits the coloring. It’s one of my favorite book covers. (Usually Maggie Stiefvater’s books are beautiful.)
