My 2019 Non-bookish Favorites (Part 2) // more internet links and even more tv shows!

Happy New Year!

Wow, *ᴵ ᴴᴬᵛᴱᴺ’ᵀ ᴾᴼˢᵀᴱᴰ ˢᴵᴺᶜᴱ ᵀᴴᴱ ᴸᴬˢᵀ ᴰᴱᶜᴬᴰᴱ!

—i also haven’t posted in two months, but that’s not as fun to acknowledge so whoops let’s not—

Ah, how history repeats itself. Just like last year, I am /very/ late to the cumulative, end-of-the-year wrap-ups. I recognize the blogosphere is probably over-saturated with everyone’s favorites of the past year—and now decade—but, somewhere in my ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ, ᴅᴀʀᴋ corner of the web, my Non-Bookish Favorites of 2019 (Part 1) is sitting alone and lonely. We can’t have that 🙅‍♀️. So, here’s the long, not-particularly awaited second half of my 2019 non-bookish favorites!

*I have to admit that I’m a sucker for those lame New Years jokes. Like, saying you’ll see someone next year on New Year’s Eve? Classic 👌.

Vox Borders is an extremely well-produced and eye-opening mini series on Youtube hosted by Vox journalist Johny Harris. Each video sheds light on current conflicts in places with confounding physical and cultural borders.

Kina Grannis is two for two!

This musical artist made it on my previous non-bookish favorites list for her podcast interview she did with Kate McGill (and also just for being my favorite musician ever (period)). I enjoyed her creations again the second half of this year when she released a series of videos where she explained the meanings behind the songs in her last album, In The Waiting.

Jubilee is a Youtube channel that strives to create videos to spread “radical empathy”. It sounds a bit hippy-dippy, but I think they do a commendable job at giving voices to the voiceless and introducing their audience to diverse perspectives with their series like Spectrum and Middle Ground.

Minecraft is a sandbox video game where “players explore an intentionally blocky, pixelated, procedurally-generated 3D world, and may discover and extract raw materials, craft tools, build structures or earthworks, and, depending on game mode, can fight computer-controlled foes, as well as either cooperate with or compete against other players in the same world” (ᴛʜᴀɴᴋꜱ, Wɪᴋɪᴘᴇᴅɪᴀ).

I was obsessed with this game for a good month last year after some friends suggested we play it online. My friends are currently scattered across the globe, so playing online games like Minecraft together is a great way for us to bond despite the distance 👭👭.

If there’s anything to blame for the prolonged lack of bookish content on my blog, it’s the embarrassingly large sum of television I’ve watched in the past six months 🙈.

🌱 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐡𝐨

Doctor Who is a British, sci-fi show following a time traveling alien dubbed The Doctor (no last name, hence the title “Who”) and his companions throughout space and time as they save the universe over and over again.

When people ask me what my favorite TV show is, my default answer is always Doctor Who because I spent so much of my formative years obsessed with it. (Middle school me was so popular!!) I hadn’t been keeping up with the show and its releases in recent years, but last summer I briefly binged parts of the latest seasons—and it felt good. Doctor Who, with all its lore, questionable filler episodes, and surprisingly tacky special effects for being a 50 year old show, is always going to hold a special place in my heart.

// does this need an introduction? //

Jeopardy is an American game show in which contestants solve clues based on Trivia answers.

I ꜱʜᴏᴜʟᴅ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ɪɴᴄʟᴜᴅᴇᴅ ᴛʜɪꜱ ɪɴ ᴍʏ Pᴀʀᴛ 1 ᴘᴏꜱᴛ, ʙᴜᴛ… Back in December 2018, Netflix added Jeopardy to its selection, and I binged it all. Even though I miss 95% of the clues when I watch it, I still find the show and the contestants’ knowledge completely entertaining. Since that month, I’ve been trying my best to keep up with the weekday airings of the show 💃.

Terrace House is a Japanese reality TV show where viewers observe the relationship dynamics between six strangers, 3 boys and 3 girls, who are provided a house to live in together.

I was never a fan of those American reality TV shows where the stars had over-exaggerated reactions to everything, but Terrace House differs greatly from them in that (1) it’s Japanese and (2) it’s so tame. The housemates on the show actually come across as normal people who just happened to be filmed, and it’s extremely refreshing to watch.

🌱 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐭 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠

As you may tell, I had (and still have) a thing for trivia shows.

The Big Fat Quiz of Everything is British game show where hilarious celebrity contestants answer questions about various topics like pop culture, sports, world events, and history.

Queer Eye is a reality TV show on Netflix that had a special season in Japan last year. In each episode, five, proudly queer men work to change the appearance, attitude, and living space of someone who deserves extra attention.

This show is so wholesome 🥺. Watching it always motivates me to take care of myself and to iron my wrinkly clothes 😅.

The Amazing Race is a reality TV show where 12 pairs of contestants race around the world for one million dollars.

Just like Jeopardy, this show has become part of my routine in recent months. My sister and I like to watch it during dinner and talk about how we would perform better if we were on the show 😂.

In A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood journalist, Lloyd Vogel, interviews the saint-like, children’s TV show star Fred Rodgers (played by Tom Hanks) and struggles to conclude that someone as kind as Mr. Rodgers can be authentic.

Any movie with Tom Hanks movie is bound to get two thumbs up from me 👍👍. This movie is certainly not for everyone (two of my sisters were snoring next to me), but if you’re the type to enjoy sappy, ~ inspirational ~ movies, then this is a movie you should watch.

🌱 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐫

// I won’t put the description of the movie because spoilers. //

I didn’t think this movie was as bad as some people make it out to be 🤷. Then again, I’m not a die-hard Star Wars fan, so maybe standards for what makes a good Star Wars movie is skewed 😅.

I had to throw this category in here because the piano made a comeback in my life! I used to play the piano yeaaaars ago, but I stopped when my family sold our piano. Ever since then, I wanted to pick it up again. So, I’m happy to say that I have a keyboard and am happily playing again 🕺!

Thanks for reading! I know it’s super late, but how was 2019 for you all? How is 2020 treating you so far? Let me know 😁.
FTC (if there’s any 🙋!!): I’ve been MIA because I had to double down and study for a big, upcoming exam. I literally haven’t been doing anything besides working, studying, and watching Terrace House these past two months. I should be back with more frequent posts once I take the test and start reading something that’s not a textbook 😴.
